I read some great books in 2021. How about you? I would love for you to share your favorite in the comments below. I will note that last years winner ”Shoe Dog” continued to be my favorite overall book that I have read in some time. It’s rare to find a book that is as entertaining and inspiring as Shoe Dog. To see that list simply click here. Continuing last years tradition I present to you my 5 favorite reads in 2021.

Celebration of Discipline by Richard J. Foster
Everyone that I have talked to so far that has read this book will say it’s one of their top favorites of all time. I wouldn’t call it ”entertaining”, but what it lacks in entertainment it makes up for in completely wrecking you (in a good Godly way).

This book challenged me more so than any other book outside of the Bible. I’m a better person for reading it and applying it. This is the type of book that a pastor can make a series out of and that’s exactly what I plan on doing.

John Adams by John Ferling
I’m a fan of Alexander Hamilton as a founding father, and yes, Hamilton the play catapulted that fandom. After finishing Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow I dove into studying John Adams who was Hamilton’s rival in the same political party. Adams is a man full of contradictions, and yet, few were a bigger player during the Revolution than he. A genius full of whit and yet petty. Few can match his political mind and work in the courtroom. I found John Adams real and inspiring.

Greenlights by Matthew McConaughey
The award for most entertaining book goes to Matthew McConaughey. No wonder it’s a New York Times bestseller, I could not put it down. Very few books make it into my list of ”must read again” and this one has.

The Ride of a Lifetime by Robert Iger
If a guy can spend 15 years as CEO of Disney and turn it around, then I want to hear his story. I really enjoyed Bob Iger’s memoir on leadership and success. This was another New York Times bestseller.

Sent: A History of UPCI Global Missions Volume 1 by William Turner
As soon as I walked into General Conference 2021 in Indianapolis, IN and saw Volume 2 I immediately bought it. I love history and I’m inspired by those who have gone before me. I encourage everyone to grab a copy of this book, especially if you are called to the missions field.
